Area: Location and History

Originally part of the manor of Barnsbury, in the 15th century a moated farmhouse was situated towards the eastern end of Tufnell Park Road. In 1754, one William Tufnell inherited the manor, bestowing the area with its name.

The area was known for its dairy farms until the early 19th century but in 1822 the Tufnells sought permission to grant building leases and created Tufnell Park Road two years later. Other roads were named after branches of the extended family.

The manor’s brick and stone gateposts survive on either side of Tufnell Park Road, just east of the junction with Lady Margaret Road.

Most of the terraced houses were built in the 1850s and 1860s, often with separate gabled roofs to make them look like semi-detached houses. Only two architects were employed throughout the project but they built adventurously, differentiating each street and sometimes every villa within a street. Façades were often plain but imaginatively ornamented, especially around the windows. Many of the surviving houses are now locally listed.

Tufnell Park station opened in 1907 on the newly built Charing Cross, Euston & Hampstead Railway, making the area instantly more attractive and convenient to professionals and city workers.

These days, Tufnell Park is a thriving inner-city suburb, popular with young families, being extremely well-served with outstanding schools. The rolling acres of Hampstead Heath are within a short walk, or run, giving endless family recreational opportunities.

Fortess Road: The main shopping thoroughfare running south towards Kentish Town. Over the last two decades, this has become home to a very diverse and distinctly upmarket range of independently-owned and run specialist shops, boutiques and food suppliers, attracting customers from far and wide. There are also many independent cafes and restaurants, with a notable lack of the usual High St chains.

Tufnell Park Playing Fields: In the 19th Century the Tufnell Park Playing Fields was a cricket ground which became the University of London Sports Ground. Now owned by Islington Council, it has been developed to provide sporting facilities and a precious green space in this densely populated area of London. Tennis court bookings can be made online and the field includes a marked-out, measured running route.

The Boston Arms: Iconic and thriving Irish Pub on the corner of Dartmouth Park Hill, the building incorporating two music venues; the Boston Music Room and The Dome, both of which have playd host to household-name artists.
